Nancy Crow produces quilt of stunning originality using deep saturated colors, often made with
her hand-dyed fabrics. She also designs fabrics for commercial use and for the delight of other
quilters. Her early quilts were constructed by the traditional method of using templates, often as
many as 80 for one quilt. Seeking new directions, she found the technique of “direct cutting,”
which allows her to “draw with fabric.” She was honored with a one-woman exhibit at the Renwick
Gallery, Washington, D.C. in 1995.
Her quilt “Double Wedding Ring” (quilted by Marie Moore) and “March Study” (quilted by Mrs.
Levi Mas) were included in “The 20th Century’s 100 Best American Quilts, Houston, Texas.
Nancy’s dream of creating a teaching facility in an old barn on her family’s 83-acre farm has
recently become a reality.
Her desire, along with Harriet Anderson, Virginia Randles, Francoise Barnes and others, to
promote contemporary quilts and quilters, resulted in the biennial Quilt National held at the Dairy
Barn in Athens, Ohio. The first exhibition caused many to ask for clarification of “what is a quilt?”
Today the exhibit is international in scope and many anxiously wait to see the newest works.

Fowler, is the guiding force behind the Quilt/Surface Design Symposium held annually in
Columbus, Ohio. Her name appears in the book 88 Leaders in the Quilt World Today.
