Alice’s biography:

I learned how to sew and embroider by hand when I was in second grade, taught by my grandmother and my great aunt.  I got my first sewing machine when I was in 5th grade and have been sewing ever since. I have been quilting on and off for over 35 years.  Quilting “obsessively” (as my husband says) for the last 15+ years.   I have been a Traveling Quilt Teacher and Speaker for about ten years.

Just about all quilting styles appeal to me.  Handwork and machine, traditional to art quilts. I love to try new techniques and ‘tweak’ old ones to make them new and fresh! I have a small rigid heddle loom to weave my own fabric to incorporate into some of my art quilts. I love playing with the different textures that you can get from different fibers!  I also crochet and knit, and am learning how to tat lace.  Never a dull moment!

I am married to a career Army man ( just retired after 35 yrs Active Duty !!)  and have traveled all over the world.  We have lived on 3 continents….I’ve lost count of the number of times we’ve packed and moved ! 3 children –  2 daughters and 1 son.   The girls are in Indiana, my son is in the Army and his location changes as often as ours has over the last 35 years! 4 grandchildren  – 2 girls and 2 boys, all of them in Indiana.  A big Fat Grey cat, crazy and stupid, but lovable anyway.

A friend invited me to a quilt guild meeting in the early 1990’s and eventually to a National Quilting Day workshop the next year. After seeing all of the beautiful quilts I was hooked. I’ve made many quilts and especially like making applique quilts, both by machine and hand!! Besides quilting I enjoy all manner of crafts. Photographic Quilts

Photographic Quilts

Friday, July 19, 2024, 2:30 – 3:30pm, Marion Public Library, Meeting Room B with Barbara Triscari

Barb, an avid photographer, began quilting when she learned she could use her own photographs on fabric to make memory quilts.  She soon saw the potential of quilting as an art medium and began to explore how the block format of both photos and quilting could be blurred.  She will share her enthusiasm and knowledge of using photographs on quilts. She also explores what other substrates besides quilting cotton can be printed; such as lace, metal, and leather. She will talk about her journey, printing at home on her own printer and sending out her own images to print on demand services.

Please join Barb and be inspired to use your photography in your own quilting!

Barbara Triscari is a self-taught quilt artist who settled in central Indiana after her military family moved around the world experiencing many cultures.  Photography is a lifelong passion that spurred her interest in quilting using her photos printed on fabric.  She has developed techniques such as textural quilting and controlled rust.  She prints directly on unconventional materials such as crochet and leather and pushes the boundaries of quilting.

Since the passing of her father, she began exploring abstracts and the theme of life’s paths and how external factors change those paths in unexpected ways.  The pandemic has changed all of our paths in ways most of us hadn’t imagined.  Military life presented many opportunities to interact with people and witness how a kindness or slight can be life changing for the recipient, yet often not but a passing moment for the giver who may never know how it altered a path.

Barbara exhibits throughout the Midwest and nationally.  Most notably, she had pieces exhibited at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, and The Quilters Hall of Fame.  She has had her works published in books and magazines and she speaks and teaches regionally.

Barbara is the Chair of Sacred Threads, SAQA Indiana Regional Representative, and affiliates with fiber art and quilt associations such as:  Studio Art Quilt Associates, INfiber, Indy Fiber artists, and quilt organizations and guilds.  Barbara Triscari can be found on social media and www.beadanddyehappy.com and reached at [email protected]

More information can be found on Barbara’s website www.beadanddyehappy.com or her old blog www.triscartsi.com.  She is active on Instagram and on Facebook. If you fly through the Indy airport, you can see a mural of her work in the connector between the two terminals during 2023-2024.

Quilts From the Collection: Mary Schafer Masterpieces

Saturday, July 20, 2024, 9:30 – 10:30am with Dale Drake, Marion Public Library, Meeting Room B

Mary Schafer (1912-2004) was an American quilter known for her intricate pieced and appliquéd quilts. Schafer began quilting in the 1950s and created over 250 quilts during her lifetime. Her quilts often featured elaborate patterns, precision workmanship, and vibrant colors. Many of her quilts were based on traditional quilt designs like Log Cabin and Lone Star, but Schafer put her own creative spin on these classic patterns. Mary’s quilts have inspired countless quilters with their creativity and technical mastery. Though she worked in obscurity for much of her life, Schafer’s quilts have cemented her legacy as one of the great American quilters of the 20th century. Mary’s family recently donated a portion of her quilts to the permanent collection at The Quilters Hall of Fame. Dale Drake will present some of these quilts as a bed turning for your viewing enjoyment as she shares the history and stories behind the quilts.

Sign up today!

Carol’s biography:

I have lived in seven states, two of them twice, and Germany. I have a BS in Educations from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. My current home is in Indianapolis with my husband and ginger cat. I have had some sort of needle and thread in my hands since I can remember.

I am a process person, so the mechanics of producing the work are very important to me. The dying, stitching, knotting and cutting are the parts I love. The finished work is the reward. I strive to be the best crafts person I can be. My art gives me wonderful and irreplaceable friendships. It gives me joy. It gives me a sense of accomplishment. I hope others enjoy looking at my work, using it and wearing it as much as I enjoy making it.
