Photographic Quilts

Friday, July 19, 2024, 2:30 – 3:30pm, Marion Public Library, Meeting Room B with Barbara Triscari

Barb, an avid photographer, began quilting when she learned she could use her own photographs on fabric to make memory quilts.  She soon saw the potential of quilting as an art medium and began to explore how the block format of both photos and quilting could be blurred.  She will share her enthusiasm and knowledge of using photographs on quilts. She also explores what other substrates besides quilting cotton can be printed; such as lace, metal, and leather. She will talk about her journey, printing at home on her own printer and sending out her own images to print on demand services.

Please join Barb and be inspired to use your photography in your own quilting!

Barbara Triscari is a self-taught quilt artist who settled in central Indiana after her military family moved around the world experiencing many cultures.  Photography is a lifelong passion that spurred her interest in quilting using her photos printed on fabric.  She has developed techniques such as textural quilting and controlled rust.  She prints directly on unconventional materials such as crochet and leather and pushes the boundaries of quilting.

Since the passing of her father, she began exploring abstracts and the theme of life’s paths and how external factors change those paths in unexpected ways.  The pandemic has changed all of our paths in ways most of us hadn’t imagined.  Military life presented many opportunities to interact with people and witness how a kindness or slight can be life changing for the recipient, yet often not but a passing moment for the giver who may never know how it altered a path.

Barbara exhibits throughout the Midwest and nationally.  Most notably, she had pieces exhibited at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, and The Quilters Hall of Fame.  She has had her works published in books and magazines and she speaks and teaches regionally.

Barbara is the Chair of Sacred Threads, SAQA Indiana Regional Representative, and affiliates with fiber art and quilt associations such as:  Studio Art Quilt Associates, INfiber, Indy Fiber artists, and quilt organizations and guilds.  Barbara Triscari can be found on social media and www.beadanddyehappy.com and reached at [email protected]

More information can be found on Barbara’s website www.beadanddyehappy.com or her old blog www.triscartsi.com.  She is active on Instagram and on Facebook. If you fly through the Indy airport, you can see a mural of her work in the connector between the two terminals during 2023-2024.
