A statement from SAQA:
SAQA Indiana is excited to again have the opportunity to showcase our art in concurrence with the Quilters Hall of Fame annual celebration and induction of Laurel McKay Horton, a quilt scholar, author, and teacher.
When you say “quilt”, many think of the bed coverings our grandmothers made. We often start with the traditional methods of piecing and appliqué used for those, but add techniques like painting on fabric, printing manipulated photos, or hand dying the fabrics. We embellish with beads, yarn, lace, and “draw” on the piece with free motion quilting. These realistic or abstract pieces belong on museum walls, not relegated to the end of a bed. (Of course many traditional quilts are truly works of art also).
Studio Art Quilt Associates, Inc. (SAQA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the art quilt: “a creative visual work that is layered and stitched or that references this form of stitched layered structure.”
Our vision is that the art quilt is universally respected as a fine art medium. SAQA’s core values are: excellence, innovation, integrity, and inclusion.
Over the past 35 years, SAQA has grown into dynamic and active community of over 4,000 artists, curators, collectors, and art professionals around the world.
With our exhibitions, resources, publications, and membership opportunities, we seek to increase the public’s appreciation for the art quilt and to support our members in their artistic and professional growth.
